What Is Blackjack?
Blackjack is one of the most popular card games in both land-based and online casinos. The goal is straightforward: build a hand closer to 21 than the dealer's hand, without going over. Despite its simplicity on the surface, blackjack rewards players who understand the rules and make informed decisions at every turn.
Card Values at a Glance
- Number cards (2–10): Worth their face value.

A "blackjack" is when your first two cards total exactly 21 — typically an Ace plus a 10-value card. This usually pays out at 3:2 odds, though this varies by game variant.
How a Round Works
- Place your bet before any cards are dealt.
- Receive two cards face-up. The dealer also receives two cards — one face-up, one face-down (the "hole card").

- Dealer reveals and plays. Most online blackjack rules require the dealer to hit on 16 or below and stand on 17 or above.
- Outcome is determined. Closest to 21 without busting wins.
The Four Core Decisions
Hit
Request another card to increase your hand total. You can hit as many times as you like, but going over 21 ("busting") means you lose automatically.
Stand
Keep your current hand and pass the action to the dealer. You'd typically stand when your hand is strong enough that drawing another card risks a bust.
Double Down
Double your original bet in exchange for exactly one more card. This is a powerful move when you hold a total of 9, 10, or 11 against a weak dealer card.
Split
If your first two cards are a pair, you can split them into two separate hands, each requiring an additional bet equal to your original. Splitting Aces and 8s is widely considered the correct play in most situations.
Soft Hands vs. Hard Hands
A soft hand contains an Ace counted as 11 (e.g., Ace + 6 = soft 17). A hard hand either contains no Ace, or an Ace counted as 1. Soft hands give you more flexibility because you cannot bust with one more card.
